A preview of the iPhone 15 Pro Max vs. iPhone 14 Pro Max gets you ready for one of the most anticipated phone launches of the year. Apple’s flagship iPhone 15 Pro Max is rumored to have some pretty hefty upgrades over the iPhone 14 Pro Max, which is currently one of the best phones you can buy. And we’re going to break down the biggest expected differences between the two Pro Max models.
So what can we expect from the most premium flagship in the iPhone 15 family? The reports and leaks we’ve seen suggest we’ll be getting a new titanium design, a cutting-edge A17 Bionic chip and – a first for iPhones – a periscope zoom lens. But that’s not all the improvements are in store. Here’s everything you need to know.

iPhone 15 Pro Max vs iPhone 14 Pro Max: Titanium design
There’s nothing wrong with the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s stainless steel sides, but we’re excited at the prospect of a titanium alloy housing for the iPhone 15 Pro Max chassis.
Titanium maintains a strength similar to high-grade stainless steel, but with half the weight. So that should result in a generally lighter large-screen phone from Apple. Well, assuming the new periscope zoom doesn’t add too much weight.
Another positive rumor says that the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max will get more rounded edges, which should make the handset more comfortable to hold. Some users have complained about the sharper, squarer edges on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, which can dig into your hands.
iPhone 15 Pro Max vs iPhone 14 Pro Max: USB-C
It’s almost a foregone conclusion that Apple will ditch the Lightning port for USB-C. After all, the EU mandates that Apple embrace USB-C by the end of 2024. And Apple has admitted it will bring USB-C to the iPhone, though it hasn’t said which models.
Rumors point to Apple bringing USB-C to all four iPhone 15 devices, though it’s possible Apple could reserve faster transfer speeds for the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. More likely is the scenario where Apple only guarantees the fastest charging and transfer speeds if an iPhone 15 USB-C cable or accessory is MFi (Made for iPhone) certified.
Either way, we can expect faster charging via USB-C with the iPhone 15 Pro Max vs. iPhone 14 Pro Max. And we’ll have to look at transfer speeds when it comes to connecting things like cameras or external drives.

iPhone 15 Pro Max vs iPhone 14 Pro Max: Periscope zoom lens
Yes, Apple has been far behind the competition when it comes to telephoto zoom lenses on top camera phones. But it looks like the iPhone 15 Pro Max should catch up on the essentials.
Rumor has it that the iPhone 15 Pro Max will boast a periscope zoom lens with 6x optical zoom, a big jump from the 3x telephoto camera on the iPhone 14 Pro Max. It has also been speculated that we could see a “hybrid” telephoto lens on the phone, which could offer variable optical zoom without having to include an additional telephoto lens.
We haven’t heard what the digital zoom will be for this camera, but we hope that Apple closes the gap with the Google Pixel 7 Pro (30x SuperRes zoom) and the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra (100x Space Zoom). The iPhone 14 Pro Max achieves a maximum of 15x digital zoom, so going up to 30x would be a very nice upgrade.
iPhone 15 Pro Max vs iPhone 14 Pro Max: Action button
Recent rumors claim that the iPhone 15 Pro Max will get a single solid-state “action button”. This is said to be a replacement for the mute switch, and will be able to function in the same way. The added benefit here is that users will reportedly be able to program the action button.
According to an iOS 17 leak, the action button can let you perform all sorts of functions, including assigning a camera, flashlight, translate, or voice memo app shortcut, enabling display magnifier or other accessibility settings, or enabling shortcuts and focus modes.
iPhone 15 Pro Max vs iPhone 14 Pro Max: A17 Bionic
The A16 Bionic chip inside the iPhone 14 Pro Max is already the fastest in a phone, but the new A17 Bionic chip for the iPhone 15 Pro Max is tipped to take Apple’s performance to the next level.
First, this is reportedly the world’s first chip in a handset based on the 3nm process, which should mean even more performance and power efficiency. In addition, Apple has reportedly released the entire stock of this chip to itself, so we are talking about a possible world exclusivity.
DigiTimes reports that the 3nm technology used to make the A17 Bionic will “enable significant specification upgrades in the upcoming iPhone lineup.” These updates are significant enough that suppliers expect increased demand for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Leaked benchmarks also seem to confirm the idea of a big performance boost. Recent numbers suggest the phone may clock in a 3,269 single-core score, followed by a 7,666 multi-core score on Geekbench 6. That’s a significant increase over the 2,557 and 6.77 scores earned by the iPhone 14 Pro.
The chip itself is rumored to have a maximum clock speed of 3.7 GHz. which is also a noticeable upgrade from the 3.46 GHz of the A16 Bionic.
iPhone 15 Pro Max vs iPhone 14 Pro Max: Battery life
The iPhone 14 Pro Max is already one of the longest-lasting phones out there. It delivered a very impressive 13 hours and 39 minutes in the Tom’s Guide battery test, which involves continuous web surfing over 5G at 150 nits of screen brightness. That’s good enough to land near the top of our list of best phone batteries.
So how much better could the iPhone 15 Pro Max be? The new 3nm A17 Bionic chip is said to be as much as 35% more power efficient compared to TSMC’s 5nm N4 process — meaning the components used in the A16 Bionic. So this will almost certainly result in an even longer run time.
The iPhone 15 Pro Max is rumored to have a 4,852 mAh battery pack, which is over 500 mAh larger than the 4,323 mAh battery in the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Apple is also said to be using a new stacked battery technology similar to that found in electric cars. This allows for additional battery capacity to be included without taking up more space
iPhone 15 Pro Max vs iPhone 14 Pro Max: Price
We’ve heard from multiple sources that the iPhone 15 Pro series could see a price increase this year. The iPhone 14 Pro Max starts at $1,099, but the iPhone 15 Pro Max can go as high as $1,299. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra starts at $1,199.
Whether or not this will happen is not clear, although supply chain reports claim that the iPhone 15 Pro series will cost around 20% more to manufacture this year. If you apply the same increase to the price tag, the $1,099 price tag for the iPhone 14 Pro Max will increase by almost $220.
We’ll just have to wait and see how it all plays out.
iPhone 15 Pro Max vs iPhone 14 Pro Max: Outlook
